Kolkata: Five workers were killed and 20 others rescued after a warehouse under construction collapsed in Kolkata’s Taratala area on Wednesday. Several injured workers were admitted to SSKM Hospital, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Rescue teams from the Army, police, fire services and disaster management authorities continued operations as more workers were feared trapped under the debris. Three people, including the project supervisor, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Following the collapse, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered a suspension of all under-construction projects approved under the previous TMC administration within Kolkata Municipal Corporation limits until July 31. He said a preliminary assessment suggested the collapse was caused by faulty structural design rather than rain or soil conditions.
The state government has ordered a multi-agency audit of construction projects, with work resuming only after safety clearances are granted.
