Bihar Declared Naxal-Free After Surrender of Last Armed Maoist in Munger

Bihar has reached a significant milestone in its fight against Naxalism, with the state being declared free of active armed Naxal groups following the surrender of the last armed Maoist, Suresh Koda, in Munger.

Munger Range DIG Rakesh Kumar said that no armed Naxalite squad is currently active in any of the 23 districts that were previously affected by Naxal activities. The development marks an important step in the state’s efforts to restore peace and strengthen security in areas that were once impacted by Left-Wing Extremism.

Munger District Magistrate Nikhil Dhanraj Nippanikar said Suresh Koda will receive the prescribed benefits under the Central Government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy. The initiative is designed to support individuals who give up armed insurgency and choose to return to mainstream society.

Koda’s wife, Pramila Devi, also welcomed his decision to surrender. She said the development has brought a sense of relief and happiness to the family.

Bihar’s Long Fight Against Naxalism

Naxal influence had expanded considerably across Bihar during the 1970s, with several districts in central Bihar becoming major areas of activity. By 2012, as many as 23 districts in the state were affected by Naxal activities.

Over the years, sustained efforts by the Central and Bihar governments have focused on strengthening security operations, encouraging surrenders and supporting rehabilitation initiatives. These measures have contributed to a substantial decline in Naxal activity across the state.

According to the information cited in the report, no Naxalite incident was recorded in Bihar in 2025, while security forces arrested 220 Naxalites during the same year.

The surrender of the last armed Maoist in Munger therefore represents more than an individual development—it marks another major milestone in Bihar’s longer effort to move from conflict toward peace, security and development.
