More than 40 students from a government school in Bihar’s Gaya district staged a protest by marching to the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Tikari, demanding immediate action over poor infrastructure and inadequate basic facilities at their school.
Carrying a memorandum and raising slogans, the students highlighted several long-pending issues, including unhygienic toilets, poor-quality mid-day meals, malfunctioning drinking water facilities, and the absence of sports equipment.
Students Say Complaints Were Ignored
According to the students, they had repeatedly informed school authorities about these problems, but no meaningful action was taken.
One student said the school hand pump had not been functioning properly for a long time, making access to clean drinking water difficult. The student also complained that the toilets were rarely cleaned, creating unhygienic conditions for children.
Another student explained that approaching the SDM’s office was their last option after repeated complaints failed to bring any improvement.
Protest Reaches SDM Office
When the students arrived, SDM Praveen Kundan was away on an official visit. Executive Magistrate Ranjit Kumar Singh initially met the students, but they insisted on presenting their concerns directly to the SDM.
The students waited until the SDM returned from Guraru, around 41 kilometres away. After meeting them, Kundan listened to each complaint in detail, including concerns about poor food quality, sanitation, and drinking water.
SDM Orders Action Within Four Days
Following the meeting, SDM Praveen Kundan directed the school administration to resolve all identified issues within four days.
He also announced the formation of a three-member inquiry committee to verify the students’ allegations. The committee includes:
- Executive Magistrate Ranjit Kumar Singh
- Tikari Block Development Officer Yogendra Paswan
- District official Chandan Kumar
The committee will inspect the school, investigate each complaint submitted by the students, and submit a report. Officials said appropriate action will be taken if any irregularities are found.
Students Demand Better Learning Conditions
The protesting students said they simply want access to basic facilities that support a healthy learning environment, including clean toilets, safe drinking water, nutritious meals, and proper school infrastructure.
The administration has assured the students that their concerns will be investigated and necessary improvements will be made based on the inquiry findings.
